GENETIC CODE OF APPLE SEQUENCED

"A team of 86 global scientists have sequenced the genetic code of the Golden Delicious apple for the first time.

The DNA breakthrough could result in new and improved apple varieties which are more resistant to disease.

Scientists from 20 institutions took two years to unravel the code - the largest plant genome uncovered to date."

Forget zits, try STIs. They may appear to be no more than a boring little acronym but they are becoming increasingly popular, especially among young people.

Chlamydia, genital herpes, gonorrhoea, the choice is yours.

Nothing to clap about, some might say.

So, if sexually transmitted infections aren't your scene, why not use a condom?

GRIM ANNIVERSARY - NO HAPPY RETURNS

"The Japanese city of Hiroshima is marking the 65th anniversary of the world's first atomic bomb attack… About 140,000 people were killed or died within months of the bomb being dropped by a US aircraft in 1945 in the final days of World War II. Mars site may hold 'buried life'

"Researchers have identified rocks that they say could contain the fossilised remains of life on early Mars.

The team made their discovery in the ancient rocks of Nili Fossae.

Their work has revealed that this trench on Mars is a "dead ringer" for a region in Australia where some of the earliest evidence of life on Earth has been buried and preserved in mineral form.

They report the findings in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters."    (Source: BBC, 30th July 2010)

THE HEAT IS ON!

When I wrote this piece in 1978, it might have seemed far-fetched. I was merely voicing concerns that were beginning to be heard about the then-new phenomenon of Global Warming or the Greenhouse Effect as it was referred to at that time. (So far back? O yes!) My warning proved prophetic. There is now scientific consensus that Climate Change is a reality. It's already happening...

Visitors to this site, who don't live in Britain, may be surprised to learn that anyone who owns a TV in this benighted country must hand over an annual licence fee (currently £139.50) to the BBC (Bloated Bourgeois Corporation) - whether they watch BBC channels or not! Those who refuse/ fail to pay are fined or imprisoned.

Fair or what? It's a quaintly eccentric British idiosyncrasy like the parasitic Royal Family (who should be abolished too).

This has been done in an effort to tidy things up & allow faster loading of pages..... So what you now have here is the 'lean & mean' version of its former disorganized glory....
