Punch & Judy packed their bags
the donkies too have gone away
inland on a holiday
they didn't stay for one more ride
now children never come to play
down by the deserted bay
buckets spades & waterwings
all long since laid aside
abandoned castles cast in sand
crumble
defenceless to withstand
seiges of the thickening tide
no holding back
these slicks of black
black oil will spoil this grainy gold
& leave the white chalk crudely dyed
a new armada's out at sea
supertankers rule the waves
they go about their business gaily
expected daily to collide
(Margate, Winter, 1979)
